Throughout the course of the 2024 fall season, the Empire Arts Center is hosting screenings of Mel Brooks films, including “Blazing Saddles,” “Young Frankenstein,” “High Anxiety” and “History of the World, Part 1.” The film screenings are presented by the Empire Art Center and the Gershman Family Foundation. Two of the films were shown earlier this month, with the films “High Anxiety” and “History of the World, Part 1” to be shown on October 27 and November 3, respectively. The film, “High Anxiety,” will be screening on October 27 at 2 p.m. By showing the films on a Sunday, it allows many of those interested to attend, kicking back and enjoying some older films as a fun, Sunday activity.
“High Anxiety” is a satirical comedy film, directed in 1977 by Mel Brooks, that follows the life of a psychiatrist that goes to work at a mental hospital where the doctors appear to be more mentally unstable than the patients. When Dr. Richard Thorndyke, the protagonist, is framed for murder, he is forced to face his own psychiatric condition, hence the name “High Anxiety.” The film operates as a comedy, often making references to some of the greatest Alfred Hitchcock films including Psycho and Vertigo. With a comical spin to the film, it functions as a great film to watch on a Sunday. The Empire hosts screenings of films, so you can grab a friend or family member to come watch.
Tickets for the event can be found and purchased on the Empire Arts Center website. The tickets are $10 including fees for General Admission. When purchasing tickets online, you can either pick them up at Will Call or print them at home, both for free. If you have not been to the Empire Arts Center, I highly recommend you start by attending one of the films in the Mel Brooks Film Series. Located in the heart of downtown Grand Forks, the Empire brings a homelike environment to enjoy and experience all of the arts that Grand Forks has to offer. Grab a friend and come see “High Anxiety” on October 27.
