Saturdays are not just a day to represent sleeping in because they have become an opportunity to connect with something truly extraordinary. This past Saturday, Apr. 26, the Empire Arts Center in Grand Forks came to life with a cultural exchange during the “Conversations Across Cultures” event. Brazil, the fifth largest country in the world, was the spotlight of the evening. This event was an invitation to immerse yourself in a whole new world.
Guests were treated to firsthand accounts of life in Brazil, shared by guest speakers Mario Batista and Anne Marques Catarin. Their stories painted a vivid picture of Brazilian traditions, daily routines, and the rhythm of life in a country known for its music, food, and celebrations. Batista and Catarin did not just share facts, but they also offered insights. Allowing the audience to connect with the culture. It was a chance to see Brazil through their eyes with authenticity and warmth.
But Brazil is not the only country being celebrated at the Empire Arts Center. The “Conversations Across Cultures” series has an exciting lineup of events, and each one is dedicated to exploring the richness of a different culture. On May 3, Australia will offer guests a glimpse into life down under. Following that, on May 17, the cultures of Georgia and Eastern Europe will be celebrated. If you are going to be sticking around Grand Forks for the summer, there is even more to look forward to. Nigeria will be featured on June 17, Mexico on June 14, and Bolivia on June 21.
What is even more exciting is each event is designed to be more than just a lecture about a certain culture. They are about creating an event, fostering understanding, and breaking down barriers and even stereotypes. Events are typically run from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m., making them a perfect way to wind down your Saturday afternoons. Guest speakers bring their stories to life, sharing personal experiences that allow you to learn directly from someone who has lived and breathed that culture. Afterward, the floor is open to questions, sparking discussions that are both engaging and thought provoking.
For those that feel like it is easy to be caught up in the rush of daily life, especially with finals looming, taking a break might seem impossible, but events like this offer something far more valuable than just a distraction. They provide an opportunity to learn, grow, and expand your horizons in a community as diverse as Grand Forks, where students and even facility are from all over the world.
Beyond the presentations and discussions these events can foster a sense of connection. They remind us that while we may come from different corners of the world, we share common values, hopes, and dreams. They are a celebration of diversity and a reminder of the beauty that comes from learning about and from one another.
If you are looking for a way to enrich your understanding of the world, mark your calander for the upcoming “Conversations Across Cultures” events. Whether it is learning about landscapes and the lifestyle of Australia, diving into the traditions of Eastern Europe, or exploring the vibrant heritage of Nigeria, there is something for everyone to learn.
