The long-awaited list of Oscars nominations has finally been released for the year 2024, and it has caused a shockwave for movie-lovers everywhere.
The Golden Globes took place about a month ago, setting the stage for the hierarchy of movies that were likely to be recognized at the Oscars. With winners like “Oppenheimer,” “Barbie,” “Poor Things,” and “Anatomy of a Fall,” these renowned films were surely expected to receive nominations at this year’s Oscars. Nonetheless, it seems that every year brings some form of disappointment.
“Oppenheimer,” “Barbie,” “Poor Things,” and “Anatomy of a Fall” find themselves yet again up for several nominations for this year’s Oscars. More highly accredited films that are in the running include “The Holdovers,” “Killers of the Flower Moon,” “Maestro,” and “Past Lives.” However, there are dozens of beloved films from the past year that have not received a single nod from the academy. While two A24 films made it to Best Picture nominations, “The Iron Claw” and “Priscilla” have gone unrecognized, even after receiving high appraisals upon their premieres. “All of Us Strangers,” starring Paul Mescal and Andrew Scott, was a highly awaited film that had critics buzzing with excitement. However, the film did not receive much box-office attention upon its release, which may have been its downfall in Academy recognition.
One of the greatest controversies regarding the upcoming award ceremony is the lack of recognition for the “Barbie” movie’s greatest female influences. While the film received nominations for achievements like Best Picture and Best Adapted Screenplay, director Greta Gerwig did not receive a single nomination for her work on the film. Meanwhile, Ryan Gosling was nominated for his supporting actor role while Margot Robbie did not receive a nomination for her lead actress role. Ryan Gosling spoke out about the lack of recognition for his female co-stars, saying, “to say that I’m disappointed that they are not nominated in their respective categories would be an understatement.”
It is no secret that Oscars viewers everywhere are feeling disappointment about this year’s nominations. However, we can still be sure that millions will tune in to the ceremony at 6 pm on March 10th to see how it all plays out.
