As winter’s frost blankets the city of Grand Forks, a beacon of holiday cheer emerges at Lincoln Drive Park with the annual “Christmas in the Park.” Since 2002, the Grand Forks Lions Clubs have transformed the park into a festive scene, aglow with lights from local businesses, churches, and civic organizations. With an entrance fee of $10, from 5:00 pm to 10:00 pm families can embark on a holiday journey where the proceeds go to bolster a variety of charitable endeavors.
The park’s transformation begins the Friday after Thanksgiving, marking the season with lights that guide visitors through New Year’s Eve in a tradition to meld community spirit with the joy of the season. The Lions Clubs have managed this holiday display, with a few members overseeing the event each night that creates an experience that features animated light displays synchronized with holiday music, accessible via a dedicated FM radio station.
True to the inclusive nature of the event, all members of the public, pets included, are welcome to share in the holiday experience. This openness reflects Lions Clubs International’s ethos, which boasts a global membership dedicated to service and community support.
The Grand Forks Lions Club, a century-old institution, has long embraced the motto “We Serve.” This commitment is visible not only in their festive endeavors but also in their substantial contributions to causes near and far, particularly focused on services for the blind and blindness prevention. Since its founding in 1922, the club has been involved in community service in Grand Forks, contributing half a million dollars to charity.
On a recent visit to “Christmas in the Park,” the range of displays was striking, each reflecting the unique flair of its sponsor. Local entities like the Alerus Center and Altru Health System, alongside American Crystal Sugar and others, have crafted festive scenes. Notable displays included the Peanuts characters, a Santa “HoHoTow” by an elf-driven truck, and a striking LED screen flanked by illuminated Christmas trees and displaying a heralding angel. The creativity of each display highlighted the sponsors’ collective spirit and enthusiasm for the holiday season.
The project’s success has garnered praises from both community leaders and residents, affirming the Lions Clubs’ role in fostering a sense of togetherness and goodwill during the holiday season. Celebrating the festive spirit while contributing to meaningful causes.
This year’s event continues the tradition started in 2002, featuring light displays sponsored by local businesses and organizations. The Lions Clubs add to the festive atmosphere with animated lights paired with holiday music, broadcasting on FM station 96.5 for guests to enjoy from their cars as they drive through.
The Lions Clubs International, with a global presence in over 200 countries, supports the Grand Forks chapter in this endeavor, which has become a part of the city’s holiday tradition. The event not only entertains but also benefits charities, highlighting the club’s motto “We Serve” in action.
