With the school year ending, let us look back at how some of UND’s men’s and women’s athletics finished.
Overall, it was a pretty underwhelming season for UND athletics, filled with lots of coaching changes at end the season.
Men’s
Hockey:
UND Men’s Hockey went 21-15-2 (14-9-1 NCHC) and finished 18th in the pairwise this season. It missed the NCAA tournament for the second time in the last three seasons. Ultimately leading to the firing of Head Coach Brad Berry. He was replaced by long-time Assistant Coach Dane Jackson, who looks to reload a roster that lost 14 players to graduation, professional hockey, and the transfer portal.
Notable games:
5-2 home opener versus Providence
7-2 versus Boston University
3-1 at Denver
4-3 OT at Western Michigan
Basketball:
UND Men’s Basketball went 12-21 (5-11 Summit) and finished sixth in the Summit League. The Fighting Hawks lost their star as junior Treysen Eaglestaff (18.9 PPG) hit the transfer portal. He scored 51 points against South Dakota State and 40 points against Alabama last season.
Notable games:
77-71 win versus Utah Valley
77-73 win at Loyola Marymount
90-97 loss versus Alabama
80-75 win versus South Dakota State
79-77 win versus NDSU (senior night)
85-69 win against South Dakota State (Summit League Tournament)
Football:
UND Men’s Football went 5-7 (2-6 MVC) and finished eighth in the Missouri Valley Conference. It lost its last five games of the season after a 5-2 start, with its only losses being at Iowa State and NDSU. There has been a change at the helm as Eric Schmidt who was a defensive coordinator at San Diego State became the program’s 28th head coach. With a revamped roster, expect a new look next season.
Notable games:
27-24 versus Montana
Tennis:
UND Men’s Tennis had a historic season. It fell short of winning its first conference title in the Division I era and first for the program since 1989. The season was nevertheless historic with a school-record of 18 wins, and it became the third UND athletic program to play for a Summit League title since joining the conference in 2018.
Women’s
Basketball:
UND Women’s Basketball went 12-19 (6-10 Summit) and finished fifth in the Summit League. Head Coach Mallory Bernhard stepped down at the end of the season. Assistant Coach Dennis Hutter took over as the eighth head coach in program history. Jocelyn Schiller (13.2 PPG), who was named Summit League Freshman of the Year, transferred to NDSU.
Notable games:
65-60 versus NDSU
80-67 against St. Thomas (Summit League Tournament)
Volleyball:
UND Women’s Volleyball went 9-18 (2-14 Summit) and finished eighth in the Summit League. After a disappointing season, there is excitement within the program around this year’s recruiting class.
“I couldn’t be more excited to finally announce the UND Volleyball Class of 2025,” Head Coach Jesse Tupac said. “Our recruiting coordinator Kristen Tupac did an incredible job bringing together one of the best classes that UND has ever seen in our sport. These athletes will make an immediate and lasting impact in Grand Forks, and our fans should be very excited to watch them compete over the coming years. This class brings together some of the best athletes in their positions from across North America.”
“Together, they share an intense passion for competition, a hunger for greatness, and the ability to elevate those around them. Further, they have all competed at an incredibly high level, with numerous successes and accolades during their prep careers,” Tupac said. “We are ecstatic to welcome these six athletes to North Dakota. Fighting Hawks fans should prepare themselves to watch some truly elite volleyball played by incredible athletes and people. Let’s Go Hawks!”
Soccer:
UND Women’s Soccer went 4-8-6 (0-4-4 Summit) and finished eighth in the Summit League. This offseason, Henrik Sohn was named the ninth head coach in program history. Nicole Randall will be his associate coach next season.
Softball:
UND Softball’s season is still alive. After going 14-42 (6-12 Summit) in 2024, the team bounced back this season, going 25-28 (7-11 Summit). It finished fourth in the Summit League and plays Omaha in the Summit League Softball Championship at 11 a.m. It looks like the new field made a difference.
