On Feb. 12, Hope Church opened its doors to host a beloved community event, Shine Prom. This is an unforgettable evening filled with fun, laughter, dancing, and is a celebration for individuals with special needs throughout the community.
This event welcomed over one hundred guests and their families for a night of fun, celebration, and friendship. From the moment attendees entered the door, they were met with applause and paparazzi as they walked down the red carpet. Once they make it past the grand entrance, they head into the fellowship hall which is where the main events of the night take place.
This event offers numerous activities for participants to take part in including karaoke, music, dancing, photobooths, limo rides and refreshments. Many dance floor favorites were played from the Macarena to the Cupid Shuffle, ensuring a lively and fun environment on the dance floor.
“Dancing with my buddy all night long was definitely one of the highlights of this event, it was the most fun I have had in a very long time,” saif Fr. Volunteer Ellie Lopez.
While many activities were of high energy and fun spirit, other opportunities were provided for those who were looking for a more relaxed night. One of these opportunities in particular was the sensory room where guests were able to enjoy a quieter atmosphere and play with therapy animals.
“This room served as a nice break from the chaos for everyone, and many guests seemed to enjoy the company of some furry friends,” said Lopez.
Attendees are welcome to come as they are in any outfit of choice, but many take this opportunity to dress to impress. However, the final touches of hair, makeup and more were left to take care of at the Prom. Multiple volunteer stands provided hair, makeup and nail styling services as well as shoe shining for those who were in need of a little extra sparkle.
This prom was made possible through the efforts of many community volunteers. Volunteering for this event is a favorite of many because of its fun nature and it giving an opportunity to make a positive impact on the community. Volunteers are able to volunteer in many different ways, one of the most popular being a prom guests “buddy”.
“I volunteered for this event because it’s one of my favorite volunteer opportunities of the year. In my future career I will be working with individuals who have special needs and helping them have a fun night where they feel special and loved is so important. It truly fills my heart,” said volunteer Jr. Bryn Hanson.
Through being a buddy, volunteers are paired with a guest and get to be by their side the entire time while they experience this magical night. A matching process takes place based on the guests’ preferences and needs to ensure that everyone has an enjoyable night. Buddies are someone for guests to have fun and dance with, ask for any help from and ultimately befriend.
“The memories the volunteers and the individuals make are some of their favorites of the whole year. I know individuals who look forward to this all year long, so being a part is so impactful. The night is full of joy, fun, laughter, and inclusion where everyone shines,” said Hanson.
Beyond the music and decorations, this evening serves a deeper meaning to the community – one of compassion and belonging. This event provided a space where differences were celebrated, and everyone had the opportunity to shine.
