UPD officer caught watching porn

Officer resigns after camera captures him viewing porn on his work computer.

University Police Department Officer Dan Lund resigned in June after it was discovered that he had been using his work computer to watch pornography.

Lund had been working for UPD since 1996 and was a supervisor for UPD at the time of his resignation.

“He was looking at inappropriate material on his computer,” spokesperson Peter Johnson said. “None of it was illegal. But it was not work-related and it was on a state-owned computer.”

UPD officers wear tiny cameras on their body and Johnson said the camera was probably inadvertently activated while Lund was watching the material on his computer. The video was then downloaded onto a computer to be reviewed, something that is done with all officers to monitor their actions.

Police Chief Eric Plummer was informed of the material that was on the body cam. Plummer then headed an investigation into the incident.

The investigation turned up no illegal images on the computer, meaning no child pornography was found. But, Lund was found guilty of using his computer for personal use and chose to resign from the department instead of being terminated.

Johnson said there are only certain times that employees are allowed to use state-owned resources for personal use, such as in a medical emergency situation.
