At the University of North Dakota, leadership and service intersect through the Mortar Board National College Honor Society. This organization recognizes students who demonstrate excellence in scholarship, leadership, and service. Designed for high-achieving upper-level students, the Mortar Board provides an opportunity for members to strengthen their leadership abilities while making a meaningful impact on campus and in the surrounding community.
Mortar Board chapters exist at universities across the United States, each guided by the organization’s core principles of academic achievement, community service, and leadership development. These values are reflected in the structure and expectations of the organization. At UND, students selected for membership must meet academic standards and demonstrate strong involvement in leadership and service activities. According to the organization’s constitution, members must maintain a grade point average of at least 3.25 and hold junior standing at the time of initiation, ensuring that those selected represent some of the university’s most dedicated and engaged students.
While academic excellence is a key component of the Mortar Board, the organization’s mission goes beyond grades. Members are encouraged to develop well-rounded leadership skills that prepare them for both professional careers and lifelong service. Through collaborative projects, campus initiatives, and volunteer efforts, students gain hands-on experience working with peers and community members. These opportunities help students build skills in communication, organization, and teamwork. Qualities that are valuable long after graduation.
Service remains a central focus of the Mortar Board’s work. Members participate in initiatives that benefit both the campus and the broader community, often organizing programs that support education, outreach, and community engagement. One of the organization’s nationally recognized initiatives is the Reading Is Leading program, which encourages college students to volunteer their time promoting literacy and learning. Through activities such as reading events and educational outreach, students help inspire younger learners while reinforcing the importance of education.
