Eberle claims honors for second straight week

North Dakota diver earns Western Athletic Conference Men’s Diver of the Week.

UND diver Rick Eberle has been named the Western Athletic Conference Men’s Diver of the Week for Oct. 14-20, league officials announced Tuesday. Eberle earned the honor consecutively, also having received it the previous week.

“It’s pretty cool, I mean it’s our first year in the conference so it’s always good to start out with my name in the spotlight a little bit,” Eberle said.

Eberle, a Fort Collins, Colo. native, won his two main events, the 1-meter and 3-meter, Friday in a dual meet at South Dakota. He scored 291.80 on the 1-meter and 294.55 on the 3-meter, pushing North Dakota to a 172-125 win over South Dakota.

After redshirting his freshman year at Colorado State in 2009, Eberle was recruited to UND, signing instantly. He has since set a new UND record for the 3-meter (329.70) and the platform (218.20), and has won several events throughout his time in Grand Forks.

This season marks Eberle’s fourth and final with North Dakota, and, undefeated thus far, he is giving it everything he’s got.

“I’ve been trying to really focus on my dives,” Eberle said. “I’m just trying to leave everything I have in the pool — I don’t want to go out with regret. We have a meet against the University of Minnesota coming up, and I just want to be able to compete with them, show them that UND has a good program. Then, I want to place as best as I can at conference and then final at least on all three boards at the Zones meet in Minneapolis, and that’ll be my last meet ever.”

The UND men face Minnesota in their next home meet, Nov. 9 in the Hyslop Sports Center. Diving is scheduled to start at 11 a.m. with the meet set to begin at noon.
