It may not be short-and-t-shirt weather in Grand Forks quite yet, but there is no doubt that daily temperatures are heating up. The sun is hanging higher, and snow is melting faster than it can fall. Another winter is over, and now that April is finally beginning to look like spring, students can look forward to all sorts of outdoor activities that have sat in hibernation since last fall, courtesy of UND.
UND Wellness Center Outpost
The Outpost is located right next to the front entrance of the UND Wellness Center and provides a large amount of outdoor equipment for students to rent. While it may still be a bit too chilly to take advantage of the Outpost’s selection of canoes, kayaks, and assorted camping gear, these larger rentals are still available to students interested. More practical to the springtime is their list of outdoor games, including spike ball, bocce ball, three-disc frisbee golf sets, beanbag toss, life-size pong, and dodgeballs. Also on offer are bike and skate packages, for those who like to get their exercise on the move. Daily fees for all games are a flat five dollars, while bike and skate packages range from six to 12 dollars per day. Students who rent equipment are free to take it anywhere they want, so long as they can safely secure and transport it.
Seeds & Plants
An often overlooked feature of the Chester Fritz Library is their Seed Library. Located just inside the southern entrance of the building, the Seed Library is part of the CFL’s Tech & Tools collection, which provides items and services that aren’t typically offered by a library. The Seed Library is sponsored by both the Chester Fritz and GRO.UND, but also accepts donations of unique seeds from UND students. Many of the seeds available for planting are native to the Great Plains, and the selection is free and accessible to students. The Tech & Tools collection also has a set of gardening tools available to check out if students don’t have their own equipment.
Softball Games against NDSU
While the college softball season has been underway since early February, the rising temperatures have made the experience of sitting in the stands of Albrecht Field far more enjoyable. The next few UND home games also happen to be against our state rivals, NDSU. The two teams will face off in three contests total: On Friday, April 24 at 6 p.m., Saturday, April 25 at 1 p.m., and Sunday, April 26 at 1 p.m. All three games will be broadcast via MidCo and the Summit League Network, but UND students enjoy free tickets to every softball home game—a wonderful incentive for attending an exciting matchup and supporting Fighting Hawks softball.
