Greek life is often painted as a social organization with historic traditions here on campus. However, one of the most important parts about Greek life that often gets overlooked is the aspect of philanthropy and their philanthropic efforts. Each Greek organization across campus host a wide range of philanthropy events that raise money, provide service, support and bring attention to important causes. These events not only benefit the community but also offer students meaningful ways to get involved and make a positive impact.
Greek philanthropy events are organized by each sorority and fraternity here on campus, to support their charitable cause of choice. Each Greek chapter partners with a national or local charity, dedicating time and resources to raising awareness and funds.
Each chapter on campus has their own philanthropy event or entire week filled with partnerships with local companies, Venmo wars, donation drives, social media posts, all you can eat food events, and more fun events to raise awareness, funds and gain campus involvement.
These philanthropy events come in many different forms and aim to get not only Greek life to participate and support, but also the entire campus. Many events are open to the public, allowing anyone to attend, donate, or participate. Information about Greek philanthropy events can be seen on bulletin boards around campus and on each chapter’s social media pages. Greek philanthropy events are intended to bring the entire community together to support a good cause and give back, which is why support from the non-Greek community is so important.
The impact of Greek philanthropy extends far beyond just our campus. These events make significant financial contributions for charities, help fund programs, research, and direct services that rely on donations. In addition to raising money, they help raise awareness about issues that often are overlooked and underrepresented. This helps the Greek community strengthen the connection between the college campus and the surrounding community.
For Greek organizations, philanthropy is a central part of their identity. Not only does Greek life host philanthropy events each semester, but many chapters also require their members to be active volunteers in the local community. These events reinforce the core values of the Greek community of leadership, commitment to service and accountability.
“Volunteering and giving back to the community has always been a core value of mine,” said Fr. Amelia Strong. “Being able to continue that into college through Greek life has been a very rewarding experience.”
While Greek life can be perceived as simply just a social organization, their philanthropy events and volunteer efforts throughout the community highlight the meaningful work that Greek life puts in behind the scenes. Their relentless commitment to service and by actively contributing to the community, Greek life shows that giving back remains a priority.
Greek philanthropy events are more than just campus activities; they are ways to make a positive impact on our community and beyond. Whether through donating, volunteering, or simply showing support, students have a chance to be a part of something bigger than themselves. As these events grow here on UND’s campus, so does their impact, highlighting the importance of community, philanthropy and unity.
