This upcoming Sunday, Feb. 8, Grand Forks community members and football fans across the United States will be gathering to partake in the premier sporting event of the year as the Seattle Seahawks take on the New England Patriots. The No.1 and 2 seeds in their respective conferences are expected to make for a great matchup in this year’s Super Bowl with the Seahawks opening as the betting favorites to win the game.
What makes this year’s matchup particularly intriguing is the fact that it is a rematch of Super Bowl XLIX eleven years prior in which ended with one of the most memorable Super Bowl’s in recent memory when Malcolm Butler’s interception in the fourth quarter sealed the victory for New England.
However, this year’s matchup is starkly different as it takes place in Santa Clara, California, and both teams front offices and playing personal are completely revamped following years of rebuilding for the opportunity to return to the National Football league’s biggest stage. The Seattle Seahawks are led by the youngest coach in the league, Mike Macdonald and longtime journeyman quarterback Sam Darnold. Whilst the New England Patriots are led by first year head coach Mike Vrabel and second year quarterback Drake Maye.
This year’s matchup highlights the dynamic nature of the NFL as neither of this year’s finalists were in the playoff last year, yet within the span of a year both teams have managed to reinvent themselves and return to the national stage.
I had the opportunity to speak with fifth year Senior Cody Domagalski about what he is looking forward to the most for this year’s Super bowl. As a neutral fan that does not pay much attention to major sports within the U.S., Domagalski stated that he is looking forward to seeing one of his favorite performers Bad Bunny take stage at the much-anticipated Super Bowl LX half time show. Going on to add that “despite not being able to understand much of what Bad Bunny’s lyrics mean, his rhythmic beats and well-choreographed performances speak volumes to what I think music is all-about… passion”. Highlighting part of what makes this year’s event so special, there is something in it for everyone to enjoy, whether that is the actual game itself, the witty advertisements, or headliner that is performing during the half-time show.
Make sure to mark this year’s Super Bowl Sunday on your calendars and be sure to coordinate with family and friends well in advance so that you can show up to any watch parties on time and solidify your spot on the couch. It is bound to be a great game, and only time will tell whether Sam Darnold and the Seattle Seahawks will be able to prevail over the Patriots and avenge their loss in the past. Whichever team ends up hoisting the Lombardi trophy will surely cement themselves in the NFL’s history books capping off one of the most impressive turnarounds in recent memory.
