On January 28th, the University of North Dakota held a talent show called “UND’s Got Talent.” UND students came together to showcase talents as a chance to win up to $1,000. First place received $1,000, second place received $500, and third place received $250. Each entry was judged by audience reaction, originality, overall performance, and stage appearance. Each act was given 5 minutes to showcase their talents, bringing a variety of skills to be observed by the audience. Some of the talents showcased included the ”Eruption” by Van Halen guitar solo, a mind-reading act, and other incredible exhibits.
Third place was split between Althea Paneles and Kathleen Thompson. Both individuals received a cash price of $250 for their incredible musical talents. Thompson began the show with her rendition of “Fly Me to the Moon” by Frank Sinatra. Her raw, undeniable talent coupled with her own musical liberties drew the entire audience to complete silence, watching in awe. Althea Paneles sang “Listen” by Beyonce, raising goosebumps for those who observed. Both women possess an incredible skill that was admired by the audience, allowing a tie for third place and the cash prize.
Coming in second place was Ketina Francois, singing her rendition of “Independently Owned” by Alex Newell. Francois had an incredible range, enchanting the audience with her musical-like delivery. Ketina clinched the second-place title, and corresponding cash prize of $500. At the end of Newell’s act, the audience feedback expressed appreciation for her incredible voice.
Securing the first-place title was Ernesto Rios Diaz. Ernesto told a story of ordering a subway sandwich, inserted with comedic bits that had the crowd laughing hysterically. Ernesto was a natural, with an incredible stage presence and the power to entice a room. Throughout Ernesto’s act, there was interaction with the judges, song, and dance. The crowd and judges loved his act, securing Ernesto the first-place prize of $1000.
UND’s Got Talent was a great way to boost campus engagement, while showcasing some of the outstanding talents that our student body has to offer. It is undecided whether UND’s Got Talent will occur again, so if this interests you, keep an eye on the UND Student Event’s Calendar for more updates.
