Teams swing into action

DRIVE UND men’s and women’s golf teams take part in Invitational.

The UND men’s and women’s golf teams were in the swing of things this past Monday and Tuesday as they took part in the Jackrabbit Fall Invitational in Sioux Falls, S.D.

The women’s team took home fourth and the men’s team placed seventh. The host, South Dakota State, took the top spot in both the men’s and women’s tournaments.

The men’s and women’s teams will play in the same tournament again in March in Primm, Nev., for the Jackrabbit Spring Invitational.

This was the first tournament of the season for the men’s team and gave it a chance to face competition for the first time.

Junior Collin Lervick was the top finisher for UND as he placed fourth overall in the individual scoring. Tied for 32nd was UND’s Aaron Pulanco and behind him, tied for 39th, was Nick Jenson. Brady Ohman took 41st and Sean Halverson finished in 42nd place.

Lervick shot low scores the entire tournament and finished the third round with a score of 69, a career low score.

The men’s team will be onthe road next Monday and Tuesday. It will travel to Houston, Texas, to participate in the Huskies Intercollegiate Invite, where Houston Baptist will be the host team. The time of the tournament has yet to be announced.

“I have been challenging our team to finish strong and I thought we finally did that today,” UND head coach Natalie Martinson said. “Yesterday, was an up-and-down day and didn’t end well, but I thought the girls responded well down the stretch.

The top ten finish for Martin was her third of the season, and she continuously has helped UND place in the top five. North Dakota was edged out of first by South Dakota State, North Dakota State and Augustana.

The UND women’s team has been maintaining top five finishes in the four tournaments it has played in so far this part of the season.

The team will have a week off before it competes and will have one more tournament before the fall season ends.

The team will finish the fall portion of the schedule Oct. 5-7 with the LPGA Xavier Invitational in Daytona Beach, Fla. The spring season will begin March 1, when the UND women will again travel to Daytona Beach, Fla. to participate in the Red Rocks Invitational.
