Working for the Dakota Student is not at all what I had expected or intended.  I was originally working in Dining on my feet for 4 hours straight (I know 4 hours is nothing, but I haven’t worked a physical job since I was sophomore in highschool…I’m weak, sue me!). So I quit and decided to go to my DS interview. I assumed I wouldn’t be on my feet and the hours would be so flexible. I was very very wrong. I do a lot of walking to and from events and I’ve spent most of my time writing, interview, and partaking in events. Even though I complain and drag my feet to do the job I asked for, I’m always left happy and thoughtful.

As an out of state freshman (so out of state, it’s on the coast), I’m very reluctant to throwing myself into an area I know nothing about, let alone speaking to people I know nothing about. But the paper forces me to step out of my comfort zone and makes me see all Grand Forks and UND has to offer. I’ve seen the excitement in people’s faces when you say you’d like to interview them. They way they talk about their jobs or opinions allows me, for a moment, to be their friends and to get to know them.

I’ll probably continue to complain and drag my feet for every new assignment (I’m set in my ways), but I’m grateful for the opportunities they give me.
