Summer break is often seen as a time to relax, but for students at the University of North Dakota, it can also be a strategic opportunity to get ahead academically and professionally. With a variety of options available, from summer courses to study abroad programs and internships, students can use the summer months to stay on track or even graduate early.
One of the most accessible options for students is enrolling in summer courses. Taking classes during the summer can significantly reduce the workload during the fall and spring semesters. This allows students to better manage stress, balance extracurricular activities, or even take on additional majors or minors. Summer classes can also help students recover credits or stay aligned with their graduation timeline. By talking with an academic advisor, students can determine whether summer coursework fits their individual academic plans and long-term goals. Summer and Fall 2026 course registration date/time will be available in Campus Connection on Mar. 27.
In addition to traditional coursework, study abroad programs offer a unique way to combine academics with cultural experience. The University of North Dakota provides summer study abroad opportunities that are especially beneficial for students with limited time during the academic year. These shorter programs allow students to experience international education without committing to a full semester abroad. Although this year’s application deadline has already passed, planning ahead can make a significant difference. Taking time now to research programs, prepare financially, and meet application requirements can position students for success in the next cycle. For those unsure about long-term travel, summer programs can serve as a valuable introduction to studying abroad.
Beyond academics, summer is also an ideal time for students to gain hands-on experience through internships. UND partners with a variety of businesses and organizations to help students secure internship opportunities that align with their career goals. These positions not only build resumes but also allow students to apply classroom knowledge in real-world settings. Internship postings for summer opportunities are typically available as early as February or March, making it important for students to begin their search early. Proactively preparing application materials such as resumes and cover letters can give students a competitive edge.
Some students even say that working towards their academic and professional goals during the summer is easier than during the regular school year due to the lessened workload. “I feel like I have more of a choice in my workload during the summer. During the fall or spring semester, I have to take a certain amount of credits.” Elenore, a student at UND, stated. “Summer classes are optional, and I can have just the amount of classes I want.”
Overall, summer provides more than just a break from classes. It offers a chance for growth, exploration, and advancement. Whether students choose to enroll in courses, travel abroad, or gain professional experience, the opportunities available through the University of North Dakota can help them make meaningful progress toward their future. By planning and utilizing campus resources, students can turn their summer into a productive and rewarding experience.
