Book clubs have been around for a long time and are a time for readers to discuss literature, share insights, and bond over a common love of books. However, traditional book clubs often come with their own set of challenges. There can be pressure to meet deadlines, with a risk of spoilers and sometimes a bummer when having to read a book you do not want to. UND has a perfect solution for those avid readers; the Silent Book Club has been a part of UND for a long time. This club can offer a refreshing alternative and a big benefit being the absence of deadlines.
Being a college student, it can be hard to find time to read let alone on a timeline. Silent Book Club allows members to read at their own pace, with no pressure to finish a book by a particular time. This can give readers a more relaxed and enjoyable experience. It can also take away the potential for spoilers. Regular book clubs’ discussions can revel key plot points or twists, potentially ruining the reading experience for those behind.
With Silent Book Club, you also have the freedom to bring and read whatever book you want. With traditional book clubs, there can be a chance where you are not going to like the book that was chosen. Silent Book Club encourages members to bring any book they are currently reading or want too. Whether it is on a nook, phone, or a physical copy, all is welcome. This allows for a diverse range of genres and topics that can spark interest in new books and authors that members might not have discovered otherwise and maybe even pique their interest to start a new genre.
Silent Book Club is designed to be low-pressure and enjoyable for all. Meetings typically start with a brief discussion where members can talk about books they are reading. This is an excellent opportunity to share insights, creating an open safe for readers. After the discussion, members can read in silence, enjoying the peaceful atmosphere of the Chester Fritz Library. Not only will they have a fun discussion but they can have one over drinks and snacks. The time is from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., but you can leave any time they need. The club typically meets on the first and third Thursdays, making it easy to fit into a busy schedule. The next meeting is on May 1, providing ample time to find a book.
With the semester and school year nearing its end, many students can find themselves overwhelmed with deadlines and responsibilities. Silent Book club offers a much-needed break, allowing members to unwind and immerse themselves in a new world. For those who love to read but struggle to find time, Silent Book Club provides a perfect solution and an invitation to read in a group, share your thoughts, and enjoy a moment of peace.
With this refreshing alternative to a normal style of book club, it can be a great place to just relax. If you have not yet, you should consider joining UND’s Silent Book Club.
