Looking for an alternative to another night on Netflix? The Downtown Development Authority (DDA) is doing its best to make Town Square livelier with its new event series, “In the Square.” The event I attended dubbed Games in the Square was all about giant yard games, board games, and most importantly, free pizza!
In a bid to revitalize the city’s communal spaces, the Downtown Development Authority (DDA) launched “In the Square,” a series of free events aimed at bringing people together for outdoor activities in Town Square. The kick-off event, Games in the Square, promised an evening full of giant yard games like corn hole, Norwegian golf, board games, and free pizza.
The DDA, known for its community-centric projects, has embarked on this new series to fulfill multiple objectives: driving more foot traffic to the downtown area, fortifying community bonds, and making Town Square a consistent hub for local activities.
The focus is on maximizing the use of Town Square and other public spaces to create an atmosphere where something is always going on, something you could just randomly come across, whether you are a local, a student, or just visiting.
However, the event had to contend with a curveball unpredictable rain showers that led to a lower turnout than expected.
Upon arrival, I was greeted by ginormous cornhole boards alongside the Norwegian golf setup. While underneath the pavilion were two tables where a variety of board games were displayed for those seeking a less physical form of entertainment.
Despite the rain, the evening had its share of memorable moments. As an attendee, I found myself playing multiple rounds of corn hole and Twister, which became surprisingly competitive. Although coming out with two losses, laughs were had around. In my view the damp conditions seemed to forge a camaraderie among those present, making the games even more enjoyable.
Despite the challenges posed by the weather, Games in the Square served as a great continuation to the DDA’s new series. The event may not have attracted large crowds, but it succeeded in its primary aim of building community spirit. And as for the delicious free pizza, it proved to be the perfect comfort food, encapsulating the event’s tone of communal warmth and optimism for what is to come in Town Square.
So what is next? At the event, one of the staff members of the DDA Sierra Jenson said to be looking for Holly Dazzle which takes place on November 19th, as it promises to be a festive event. Slated for 3:30 to 5:30 PM with smores, hot chocolate, and a parade float!
