North Dakota’s weather has been a whirlwind of unpredictably, keeping everyone guessing from dawn to dusk. Mornings lately have often started with snowfall that melts away under the warmth of the afternoon sun only to be replaced by rain and chilling winds as the day transitions into night. It is enough to tempt anyone to stay indoors under a blanket, bundle up, and be cozy. However, the UND’s University Walking Club offers a compelling reason to step out and embrace the weather of Grand Forks.
Walking is one of the simplest yet most rewarding forms of exercise, and the University Walking Club takes it to the next level. Whether you are looking for a way to relax, connect with others, or simply enjoy fresh air, this club has something to offer everyone.
With the low effort of walking, there can still be a benefit. A brisk stroll outside can clear your mind, boost your mood, and energize your body. For students, it is a great way to de-stress, especially for those juggling classes and even studying for finals as the year wraps up. This club can provide that much needed escape from academic pressures, giving you a great way to break your routine and a chance to unplug and get away from screens. Even just an hour spent walking outside can provide much needed mental and physical rest, leaving you refreshed and ready to go back into your school routine. With just an hour stroll, it does not take you away from school too long, giving you a nice short but needed break.
For those who find exercise intimidating, walking is a gentle way to stay active without feeling overwhelmed. Unlike other physical activities that may feel intense, the walking club is refreshingly laid-back. It is not about speed or competition, it is about showing up, being present, and enjoying the journey. It is accessible to everyone no matter your fitness level, and if you have problems or need assistance, the University Walking Club has lots of ways to help.
The thing that makes the University Walking Club truly special though is the social element it brings to walking. The sense of belonging can be fostered with meeting week after week, becoming more than just a group but a community. Friendships can blossom whether you are exchanging recommendations for the best local coffee spots or simply enjoying the silence. Walking with a group adds an extra layer of fun; you could end up giggling, laughing up a storm, or making new memories together.
There can also be something relaxing about walking alongside others, sticking up casual conversations. Walking together can create that balanced and comfortable atmosphere. The club is about enjoying the moment and connecting with others in a low-pressure and welcoming environment. With walking outside and enjoying the weather, there is no pressure to keep the conversation flowing nonstop. The quiet is easily filled by the exploration of the walk. It is a great club to really put yourself out there before another school year ends and another begins. Walking side by side allows you a chance to meet new people, exchange ideas, and possibly make new friendships that extend beyond the group. Whether you are a seasoned extrovert or a more reserved introvert, the club provides the perfect environment for all.
Through rain, shine, or even snow, the University Walking Club meets every Sunday at 2 p.m., meeting at the southeast corner of University Park. In North Dakota, you have to embrace the fluctuation of weather and take on the adventure it brings.
Whether you are wrapping up the semester or staying on campus for classes over the summer, the club offers a consistent, uplifting way to spend your Sunday afternoons. It offers an amazing opportunity to explore with others every week especially during summer when the campus is mostly empty.
So why not give it a try and set aside an hour from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. on a Sunday afternoon and head to southeast corner of the University Park any Sunday from now and until the end of summer. Whatever the weather brings, you can find a group of friendly faces ready to walk, chat, and enjoy the outdoors together with.
