9/10/2013: Kjerstine Trooien
There really isn’t anything like a new semester. True, it has its downsides. For example, textbooks cost an arm, a leg, and your firstborn. Early mornings (before ten a.m. if you’re me) are rough after sleeping in all summer. Don’t even get me started on parking.
But all griping aside, there is quite a bit to look forward to as well. We have a whole four-ish months ahead of learning. I truly lack the words to describe how excited this makes me. We also get to see friends who practically disappeared during the summer. There are plays, art shows, movies at the Union, and crunchy fall leaves waiting for us. We are incredibly lucky. Heck, I’m even looking forward to winter.
I’m excited about my classes this semester as well. We’re reading some of my favorites in one class, as well as reading books I’m ashamed to admit I’ve never read. I even got into a class I was waitlisted for. This semester, I’m studying topics that engage me, challenge me, and force me to think outside of the box.
I’m also back at the Writing Center. I’ve held a position there as a consultant since January of 2012 and am excited to be returning. I’m starting at the Dakota Student as well (which I hope you’ve figured out, since you’re reading this blog) and I can’t wait to start writing.
Granted, I understand I’ll probably change my tune once midterms get here. Sure, I’ll whine and moan about how much homework I have and how pointless exams are, but I hope I don’t forget why I’m here. I’m here to learn. I’m here to expand my mind. I’m here to go to school. Sure, it may be tough once in a while, but overall the experience has been (and I hope continues to be) incredible. Happy new semester, everyone!
