UND women sweep Mavericks

After a weekend sweep over Minnesota State in Mankato, Minn., UND’s women hockey goaltenders have both proven the level they’re capable of playing.

Shelby Amsley-Benzie started in the net Friday night, stopping 15 shots for her sixth shutout and a 5-0 victory for North Dakota. Lexi Shaw took her post Saturday, stopping eight shots and allowing just one goal for a 2-1 win and sweep of the Mavericks.

“I thought both kids played well,” UND coach Brian Idalski said. “I thought defensively, the whole team played well, especially after last weekend.”

A win and a loss in the team’s last series at home wasn’t what the team was hoping for, but the team continues its stride toward improvement.

UND’s defense shut down Mankato’s offensive attack, only allowing 26 shots all weekend. The penalty kill also has not let up a single goal in 16 power plays so far this season.

North Dakota returns home this weekend to face Minnesota-Duluth. Puck drop is set for 7 p.m. Friday night at Ralph Engelstad Arena.
