BLOG: My new chair

This is my first blog entry as a member of The Dakota Student staff— which happens to also be it my first blog entry ever. Unlike many of my co-workers, this is the first job I’ve had that came with a chair. That’s right, I’ve never sat down for a day of work in my life. While this is a nice change from working construction and cooking, I’m still getting used to it.

My last job was cooking at the Green Mill restaurant on Columbia Road. You might have seen me on a busy hockey night throwing pizza dough in the air. I don’t want to brag, but I must say I am a darn good cook, especially when it comes to pizza. Although I loved the people I worked with at the Green Mill, putting “Master Pizza Chef” on a resume doesn’t help a Communications major stand out.

Before the Green Mill, I worked construction in Arizona. My uncle hooked me up with his company and had my brothers and I working in Gila Bend building a solar farm. We worked 40-60 hours a week, in an average temperature of 110 degrees. When we woke up for work at 3 a.m., it would already be 98 degrees out and at the end of the workday when we got in the car, the dashboard would read 125 degrees. It was a brutal job; especially for pale Minnesota kid who gets sunburned from watching TV, but it makes me appreciate my new job that much more.

As much as I enjoy cooking and working with my hands, I am excited to use my mind in this new job. I can already tell that I am working with an awesome group of students and I am looking forward to the upcoming months of production.  Most of all, I’m excited to sit on my butt and roll around in my chair.
