BLOG: Volunteering

This past weekend, my sorority held its bi-annual philanthropy to raise money for literacy across the United States.

On Saturday, we held two events to help fundraise. During the afternoon, we hosted a Greek-wide volleyball tournament at the Wellness Center. In the evening, we held an all-you-can-eat pancake feed. Overall, the whole day was a success and was very rewarding.

Giving back to the community is something we all can do. Yeah, I know volunteering doesn’t always sound fun compared to catching up with your latest television shows or spending time with friends, but it actually can be pretty fun. Now, I’m sure most of you have volunteered before, as many of us have, whether it be on your own, a family tradition, or a requirement for school. The thing is, it’s a great habit to keep up.

The great thing about volunteering is that there are choices. If walking pets or reading to children is not your thing, I’m sure you could find something that catches your interest. If you’re into technology, volunteer to help a local children’s robotics team or teach underprivileged people how to use a computer. If you love to sing, volunteer to sing for residents in a nursing home. If you like arts and crafts, volunteer at Art Night at the L.I.S.T.E.N. Center here in town.

There are so many opportunities out there and what’s even more awesome is that you can do something you love while helping out someone else. And if walking pets is your thing, go to the humane society in town. I’ve personally done that and I had a blast playing with the animals and taking them for walks outside. And if you do like reading to children, volunteer at the R.E.D. event at one of the local schools in town.

The thing is whether you’re raising money for a great cause, like I was this weekend, or volunteering your time to help make someone else’s day, you will definitely feel a lot better than if you just watched your favorite television show all day.

So, get out there and find something you’re passionate about and volunteer, volunteer, volunteer!
