BLOG: A few of my unfavorite things

I’ve never liked the beach.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not a grouchy stick in the mud that can’t have fun. I’m just not a big fan of water in general. Except drinking it, obviously. I’m not really into swimming pools or beaches, or swimming at all. I can swim, but I don’t see anything fun about it.

While I’m listing off things I’m not a fan of, allow me to put in any and all sports. As in every single one of them. Football, Basketball, Baseball, any type of ball, I don’t really care. I just can’t get invested in a bunch of random people playing a game. Maybe it’s because I view it as a numbers game; not really a test of somebody’s physical ability but a randomized probability factor that varies depending on many factors besides pure physical skill alone.

The classification of sports teams as good or bad is meaningless to me, because in my mind, they are all equally unimpressive. You know what is impressive? Gymnastics: those people flip and contort their bodies around in amazing and fantastical ways. I just can’t get as excited about a large group of people running around with a ball. I don’t get it.

I feel like I’m being overly negative today, certainly not my intention. It’s not that I don’t enjoy anything, it’s just that there are a lot of things that many people enjoy that I don’t enjoy, because I don’t understand them.

There are plenty of things I do understand that I do enjoy. For example, I enjoy a good debate when done properly. I enjoy films and video games as art forms of the 21st century. I enjoy good music produced by talented people, regardless of genre. I enjoy reading a well-written book, but I don’t enjoy books as much as I used to. I enjoy playing music and discovering new things with music. I enjoy writing poetry and using that to express myself. I enjoy my job,  every aspect of it. I enjoy being alive and all the perks that go with it.

In the end, there are very few things that I don’t enjoy. Except for sports. And swimming.
