LAS VEGAS, Nev. — Abram Wiebe had plenty to think about after North Dakota’s NCAA Semifinal loss to Wisconsin on Thursday night. Despite the loss, which ended the Fighting Hawks’ season early, another door opened for the defenseman.
Yesterday morning, the Calgary Flames announced that Wiebe – a Vegas Golden Knights draft pick that the Flames acquired in the Rasmus Andersson trade — would join the team on a two-year, entry-level contract that will run through the 2026-27 campaign.
The 6-foot-3, 210-pound blueliner was the second Fighting Hawk to sign with an NHL team upon the season’s end.
“It’s been a crazy 24 to 26 hours,” the defenseman told the media in Seattle today. “Going through the emotions of losing against Wisconsin the other night and then being able to flip that page and sign my first NHL contract was such a surreal experience.”
The contract, which uses the initial year this season, is valued at $950,000 AAV with an identical cap hit (per Daren Hermiston).
The 2025-26 North Dakota assistant captain recorded 63 points (10-53—63) in 118 appearances as a Fighting Hawk. Wiebe was named to the All-NCHC Second Team during the 2025-26 campaign. In his three seasons at UND, he appeared on two Penrose-Cup-winning teams and helped UND to its first regional championship since 2016.
On Friday, Wiebe was on a plane to Seattle, set to play in his first NHL game just two days after the end of the college season.
‘It’s something you work your whole life towards,” the newest Calgary Flame reflected before the game. “I’m super excited for the opportunity.”
Abram Wiebe became the 113th North Dakota alumnus to play in the NHL upon his debut against the Seattle Kraken.
