This year, Oct. 31—and by extension Halloween—falls on a Friday. This is great news for any UND student looking to make the most of the spookiest night of the year without having to worry about making it to class the next morning, but there are also plenty of opportunities around campus for anybody looking to get into the Halloween spirit before the sun goes down. Here are a few Halloween-themed happenings students can participate in that take place in the hours before Halloween night.
The smallest event of the day is also the earliest. From 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., students can grab a free candy bar from a vendor table in the Memorial Union for the University’s self-labeled “Candy Bar Day.” The event will run only as long as supplies last, so students set on getting a bar should be there as early as possible.
For those looking to get more than one candy bar, The Chester Fritz Library will be hosting a Trick or Treat event within the library from 10 a.m. until 4:30 p.m., and don’t be fooled by the name; this event welcomes everybody to participate, not just children. Students, staff, and any accompanying family members can visit candy distribution locations spread throughout the CFL, as well as a prepared photo backdrop to capture the moment. Of course, there will also be plenty of spooky books and movies that can be checked out by any UND student.
From 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., the Hilyard Center, located in Room 201 in the Memorial Union, will be hosting their own “Halloween at the Hilyard” celebration. All are welcome to attend the event, which will include Halloween themed snacks, games, and movies.
Adjacent to the Hilyard Center’s event and happening within the same time frame, the UND Pride Center, located in Room 204, will be offering free tarot card readings for students who wish to embrace Halloween’s spooky vibes and “unlock the secrets of their destiny,” according to the event listing. Tarot card readings will be available from 1-3 p.m., making the activity a great complement to Halloween at the Hilyard.
Later in the day, from 4-6 p.m., the Adelphi Literary Society and the UND Writing Club will be hosting their annual joint Halloween party in Merrifield Hall’s CALL Center, located in Room 220. The party will feature board games, an open mic for scary storytelling, Pizza, snacks and even a costume contest.
The last official Halloween event of the day is the UND Dining Services Halloween Spooktacular, a themed meal taking place from 4:30-8 p.m. at the Wilkerson Dining Center. Themed food items will include classic fall favorites as well as more intentionally spooky items, with options ranging from butternut squash soup, popcorn balls and pumpkin cookies to “Demon Pig” sliders, Halloween Punch and Hocus Pocus Cupcakes. Attendees should beware that this is not a free event; students without a meal plan will be charged an entry fee.
