The atmosphere at the Ralph Englestad Arena was stimulating on Tuesday, October 3, as families and University students gathered for the North Dakota Hockey Fan Fest. This exciting event, which showcased the Fighting Hawks, was a night filled with action, interviews with the players, and a brief look into what may come this season.
The evening kicked off with doors opening at 5:30 pm, and fans wasted no time coming into the arena. And in the spirit of celebration, we enjoyed complimentary popcorn and soda. Additionally, giveaways, including magnets and other memorabilia, were distributed to attendees.
As the clock approached 6 pm, all eyes were on the ice, where an intrasquad scrimmage was about to unfold. Donning their University jerseys, the Fighting Hawks took to the rink.
The scrimmage itself was interesting to watch. Initially, it was an all-out battle with the players facing off against each other five on five. The intensity on the ice was matched by the excitement in the stands. Cheers and applause erupted as goals were scored, showcasing the talent of the athletes.
The scrimmage evolved into a series of simulations, four on four, then three on three, with some alternating power plays. A showcase for what may come throughout this upcoming season. The players demonstrated their adaptability and quick thinking as they navigated the challenges posed by the power plays.
During breaks, the Jumbo Tron showcased the enthusiasm of the crowd and an up-close view of the action. It was a great experience, allowing fans like me to witness the Fighting Hawks as they played throughout the evening.
It is important to note the young hockey fans were on their feet, eyes wide with excitement as they watched their hockey heroes go head-to-head with the opposing goaltenders. During breaks many of them were doing their best dance moves to the delight of the audience, several had signs for the UND Hockey Team that were shown on screen, their enthusiasm shown to the crowd.
The grand finale of the evening was a three-player shootout on each goal. This showdown had the players showcase their individual skills, attempting to outwit the opposing goaltenders.
With a final score of 3-2, the action was over.
Following the action on ice, fans had the opportunity to get to know the players on a personal level with a team autograph session. This interaction between the Fighting Hawks and their supporters added a positive touch to the event.
As the night ended, fans left the arena with smiles on their faces, eagerly looking forward to the upcoming hockey season. The North Dakota Hockey Fan Fest proved the strong bond between UND’s hockey program and its supporters.
