FINISH Men’s and women’s teams take fifth and sixth places in weekend meet.

The UND women’s and men’s cross country teams attended the annual Woody Greeno/Nebraska Invitational at Pioneer Park on Saturday in Lincoln, Neb.

The men’s team finished in fifth place while the women ran away with sixth, but couldn’t keep up with Witchita State, who won the meet with 35 points.

The women competed in a 6K with 86 competitors hailing from eight Division I teams across the midwest. As a team, UND fell in the middle of the pack and came away from the race in 6th place with 154 points. The home field advantage did not seem to hold true, as UND was able to defeat Omaha-Nebraska by a margin of three points, and the Green and White claimed seventh.

Courtney Frerichs, a runner from Missouri-Kansas City, captured medalist honors with an impressive time of 20:57.80.

While the team’s placing in the race was average, North Dakota junior Erin Wysocki, who hails from Grand Forks, ran a career race Saturday at Nebraska. Wysocki placed seventh out of the 86 runners. She completed the 6k course in a personal-record time of 22 minutes, 24.50 seconds.

Three other UND runners finished in the top half of the heat.Sophomore Lydia Lutz finished the race with a time of 23:45.10, putting her in 34th place. Following close behind her was teammate Jessica Lynch, who finished 36th with a time of 23:49.60.

Over on the men’s side, UND placed fifth out of seven teams on a challenging 8k course. The team defeated Kansas State and Creighton. Senior Sam Saccoman led UND, placing 28th among the 75 competitors.

Junior Nick Lindstrom finished 29th, while sophomore Parker Wharram placed 32nd and junior Nate Peterson came in at 33rd. The host team had better luck with the men, taking the title at its home meet.

The UND men and women’s cross country teams will take a week off and return to action Oct. 4 at the South Dakota State Classic in Brookings, S.D.
