UND Student Senate passed a bill Sunday that will impact students using the Student Safe Ride Program.

The Student Safe Ride Program allows UND students to receive a ride within the greater Grand Forks community for just $5 with a valid student ID through a partnership with the Nodak Cab Company.

The average ride for two students will save each student about $6.

In addition to the $5 for one student, any additional rider was previously just $1. The bill ups that cost to $2 per rider. The increase from $1 to $2 is meant to lessen the monthly rate Student Government pays to Nodak Cab and to offset fees for the company’s expenses for the program.

Some of the senators said they were concerned about the program’s lack of awareness and advertising,  but bill authors said plans for more advertising are in motion.

Also presented at the meeting was a correction from Treasurer Abi Nadeau.

Nadeau said she made a mistake during last week’s meeting when she announced the amount of money to be spent by Student Government can spend.

Nadeau had previously reported $75,512 in money senate can spend freely. The actual amount is $343,585 plus $100,000 as a cushion in case of emergencies.

Nadeau added she hopes to put Students Government’s budget on its website.

“I am working on streamlining the budget to put it online,” Nadeau said. “Then students will be able to see where their fees are going.”
