Golf team takes second place

OPENER: UND’s golf team finished second in last Friday’s Cobber Open.

With contributions from seasoned players and new faces on the team, the UND women’s golf team opened its season with a second place finish in the Cobber Open on Friday at Wildflower Golf Course.

Sophomore transfer Sadie Martin posted a 74 (2 over par) to elevate the team and pace herself third. After playing her first season at Augustana, Martin secured the best round for a UND golfer to match last season. Following just behind, junior Mikayla Kromy and freshman Dani DelGreco each tallied 77 (+5) to boost the Green and White to the No. 2 spot, just behind North Dakota State University. The duo finished in the top ten, Kromy posting a personal best round and DelGreco playing in her first collegiate event.

Emma Kishel and Alexi Guggisberg also contributed to the team’s second place finish with scores of 86 (+12) and  87 (+13), respectively.

Amanda Fairweather and Madison Gemar’s scores of 82 (+10) were enough to secure the 28th spot for individual rounds. Lauren Schweppe posted an 88 (+16) and Rachel Oeltjen produced a 92 (+20) following close behind.

“Today was a great day to start the season and hopefully we can build on this as we move onto multiple-day tournaments this fall,” UND coach Natalie Martinson said in a press release. “We have a nice mix of veterans and newcomers, and got contributions from both today, which was nice to see.”

North Dakota is currently playing in the Grizzly Invitational in Missoula, Mont. -— the first tournament hosted by rival since 1997 — in hopes of continuing its success moving into Big Sky action.
