On Apr. 24, the University of North Dakota’s Department of Communication held a Communication Networking Social and Scholarship Ceremony as the final part of their Communication Appreciation Day event. This is an annual event that takes place to celebrate the importance of communication skills and to provide opportunities for communication students to gain new knowledge, experiences, form new connections, and to be recognized for their accomplishments in their field of study.
The networking social closed out the day and served as a great opportunity for students and faculty to connect with one another. Networking is important in any field, but especially in communications as it is a huge part of all the associated career paths. Strong communication skills and the ability to form connections to advance your skills that open new opportunities is what this event is all about. A lot of careers in communications revolve around networking and forming connections, so it is events like this that allow the department’s students to develop these necessary skills.
Students and faculty were able to connect with each other in a variety of ways throughout the day that was filled with showcases, ceremonies, and lectures. However, this final event served as the perfect opportunity for everyone to come together to discuss the events of the day along with possible involvement opportunities they may have heard about throughout the event. It gave students the opportunity to connect with peers outside of their usual classroom as well as interact with their professors and other faculty members. It was a great opportunity to get outside of the classroom and experience something new.
The second part of this final event was the scholarship ceremony. This portion is meant to honor and award individuals who have shown their dedication to the Department of Communication. It also provides time for other individuals to learn about opportunities they may be eligible for in the future. Along with this, students and faculty were able to support their peers who were being recognized. The scholarships presented are intended to support students in their academic careers as they expand their knowledge about communication and pursue a career in the field.
By serving as an opportunity to allow communication to flourish through networking, celebration, and awards, the networking and scholarship ceremony event was a great way to close out this year’s annual Communication Appreciation Day. The day was filled with presentations and opportunities for the Department and their students and faculty to feel supported and appreciated by their UND community. This was only one such event out of the many that took place on this day.
