This upcoming Sunday, UND’s Greek Council is setting up and hosting their bi-annual Study-A-Thon event in the large ballroom located on the second floor of the Memorial Union. Typically, this event takes place the Sunday preceding final’s week at the end of the semester and acts as a safe space for Greek life members and UND students alike to home in on their studying skills and ace their finals.
Throughout the duration of the six hour event the Greek Council designates a portion of their annual budget to cater food for all the participating students; there has been Jimmy-Johns accompanied by Boss’s Pizza in years past. Acting both as a reason to get students in the Memorial Union to study but also as fuel to push students through this final stretch of the semester.
The layout of the event is set up as if students were attempting to run a marathon, just in this application it is a study-a-thon instead. With the afternoon split up into differing segments, there are designated quite times in which studying is encouraged accompanied by much needed lunch and rest breaks to help mitigate any potential stress or anxiety students may be feeling as they use this time to prepare for their final exams.
Anthony Hickel, a second-year University student who attended the Study-A-Thon event last semester, spoke about his experience. Hickel stated that the “Study-A-Thon helped me get good, quality hours on studying before exams and played a big role in me cruising through each of my finals later that week.” It should also be noted that Hickel was on the receiving end of one of the prizes that were distributed at the raffle following the event, leading to another reason to attend the Study-A-Thon this year.
Every year, as part of the planning and coordinating that goes into setting up the Study-A-Thon, members of the Greek council pool together and pick out a set array of premium prizes to be given out to students at the conclusion of the event. Last year, these prizes ranged from headphones, coffee makers, and a signed UND Hockey Jersey. The premise behind the raffle is to encourage students to stay the entirety of the event and study as much as possible because at the conclusion of each hour of studying from the start of the event, members from the Greek council distributed one raffle ticket to each student studying with a total of six total tickets for the drawing of the prizes at the end. Your chances of winning one of these touted prizes are much higher if you stay the entirety of the event, and you can enjoy a free meal and get ahead with studying while you are at it.
For these reasons, you should be sure to visit the Memorial Union this upcoming Sunday, December 15, from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. and take part in this semester’s Study-A-Thon event as you gear yourself up for acing finals week without any doubts.
